Spanish style fireplace designs encompass a wide range of vibrant styles, including exciting regional
\nvariations from around the globe! As a result, a Spanish style fireplace means different things to different
\npeople.<\/p>\n

The tremendous power and influence once wielded by Spain and its con-
\nquistadors resulted in the spread of Spanish culture across many parts of the globe, from the Americas \u2014 North, South and Central \u2014 to the Philippines . . . . .<\/p>\n

Consequently, Spanish culture<\/strong>\u00a0has mingled \u00a0\u00a0with \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0and \u00a0subsequently embedded \u00a0itself \u00a0\u00a0\u2014 \u00a0\u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0native cultures \u00a0of \u00a0numerous countries and island nations around the world.<\/p>\n

While \u00a0some may picture an old world design \u00a0\u00a0from \u00a0\u00a0Mother \u00a0\u00a0Spain \u00a0\u00a0when thinking \u00a0about \u00a0a\u00a0 Spanish style fire-
\nplace, \u00a0similar \u00a0to the striking example
\nat \u00a0right \u00a0by\u00a0\u00a0Estrella Stone<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0. . . . . .
\n. . . others will conjure up images of a
\nKiva fireplace<\/a>\u00a0(below left) \u00a0or\u00a0 a
\nMis-
\nsion Revival<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0inspired\u00a0 design \u00a0\u00a0(below right) \u00a0from \u00a0the southwestern United States . . . . . . .<\/p>\n

or any number of
\nSpanish Revival<\/a>\u00a0designs, \u00a0introduced across much
\nof the United States in the 1920s,
\nthat
\ncontinue \u00a0to \u00a0be \u00a0popular to
\nthe present day . . . . . . such as
\nthe one pictured at right.<\/p>\n

Still others will envision a vibrant and richly colored handmade tile surround from Mexico . . . similar
\nto the stunning example pictured below . . . . .<\/p>\n

or an elegant stone mantel and surround, such as may be found in a formal dining room or study in Brazil
\nor Argentina.<\/p>\n

Though inspired by Pueblo architecture of the American southwest, \u00a0tradi-
\ntional Kiva fireplace design has
\nbeen greatly influenced by the many people of Spanish heritage in the region. \u00a0\u00a0From the use of bold colors
\nand decora-
\ntive detailing . . . to variations of the traditional Kiva shape . . . . elements of Spanish
\ndesign and style permeate many of these impressive structures.<\/p>\n

Intricately detailed and richly colored tiles \u2014 another hallmark of Spanish-inspired \u00a0design \u2014 are \u00a0frequently
\nemployed in Spanish style fireplace sur-
\nrounds. \u00a0Though not nearly as common, the inside of the firebox pictured
\nbelow (right) has also been tiled.<\/p>\n

Firmly established by the 11th century, ceramics \u00a0became \u00a0an \u00a0integral part of architectural decoration in Spain.
\nThe\u00a0azulejo<\/em>, \u00a0\u00a0or \u00a0painted \u00a0and \u00a0\u00a0tin-glazed ceramic tile, \u00a0was \u00a0introduced to Spain by \u00a0the Moors, \u00a0who \u00a0learned
\nthe craft from \u00a0the \u00a0undisputed \u00a0masters \u00a0of \u00a0tile decoration . . . the Persians. The term, \u201cazulejo,\u201d is derived
\nfrom an Arab word meaning \u00a0\u201cpolished stone\u201d \u00a0and reflects the \u00a0Arab influences often found in the tile \u00a0\u00a0such \u00a0\u00a0as
\ninterlocking \u00a0geometric, curvilinear, or floral motifs.<\/p>\n

From Spain the art was transmitted to Italy, Portugal and Holland . . . . . and from there to England.
\nSpanish con-
\nquerers introduced it to Mexico, where it evolved into its own distinctive style between the 16th
\nand 18th centuries.<\/p>\n

Another \u00a0popular \u00a0material used to create \u00a0Spanish style fireplaces is natural \u00a0stone . . . . . \u00a0particularly
\nlimestone<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0and \u00a0Cantera stone, \u00a0a
\nstrong \u00a0and \u00a0porous, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0yet \u00a0\u00a0light-
\nweight \u00a0stone mined primarily from regions of southern Mexico.
\nFound naturally \u00a0in \u00a0a wide variety of col-
\nors and textures, it is very durable
\nand has been used on architectur-
\nal
\nfacades \u00a0all \u00a0over \u00a0the world for hundreds of years. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mexican Can-
\ntera is used in the four elegant de-
\nsigns below.<\/p>\n
