Arts and Crafts fireplaces are generally the focal point of a Craftsman Style home. An open floor plan, which is typical of the style, affords easy access and an unobstructed view of the
\nhearth. \u00a0\u00a0As a result, the fireplace is a prominent architectural element that often sets the tone for the overall style and decor of the home\u2019s interior.<\/p>\n

The copper hood or canopy was frequently employed in the design of Arts and Crafts fireplaces.\u00a0 The
\nbeautiful example pictured below, by\u00a0Archive Designs<\/a>\u00a0in Eugene, Oregon, is a stunning tribute to that particular design element!<\/p>\n

Similarly, the present-day example pic-
\ntured \u00a0at \u00a0right is combined with hand-
\nforged \u00a0iron and placed above an
\nArts and Crafts tile<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0surround \u00a0to \u00a0create \u00a0a very striking composition. \u00a0Once again, this\u00a0 design \u2014 as well as the two that follow \u2014
\nare\u00a0 from the highly skilled ar-
\ntisans at Archive Designs.<\/p>\n

In the examples below, \u00a0the entire sur-
\nround \u00a0is \u00a0crafted from hammered cop-
\nper and forged iron. \u00a0\u00a0Note the
\nbeauti-
\nfully \u00a0detailed\u00a0 repousse\u00a0 panels in the example on the right.<\/p>\n

Not to be left out, \u00a0the finely crafted wood mantels and surrounds pictured below are veritable masterpieces
\nof the woodworker\u2019s art. Note the precise fit and finish of the two mantels in the close-ups directly below, \u00a0as

In the following examples, the Arts and Crafts detailing has been extended beyond the fireplace to include
\nthe window and\/or ceiling treatment. \u00a0\u00a0And once again, the fit and finish in each example is superb!<\/p>\n

Though more common in Europe than America, natural stone is also used to make Arts and Crafts fireplaces.\u00a0 The simple but elegant limestone designs pictured below are made in England.<\/p>\n

Accessories for Arts and Crafts Fireplaces<\/h2>\n

With \u00a0an\u00a0 Arts and Crafts fireplace, \u00a0the design of accessory items such as fireplace \u00a0doors \u00a0and \u00a0screens \u00a0is
\nas important as the design of the mantel
\nand \u00a0surround \u00a0to ensure an authentic Arts and Crafts look. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As
\nwith \u00a0the mantel \u00a0and \u00a0surround, \u00a0no \u00a0design element or detail is too small or insignifi-
\ncant to be overlooked.
\nConsequently, like the reproduction metalwork and Arts and Crafts tiles shown above, some extraordinary
\nhandcrafted designs for \u00a0fireplace \u00a0doors \u00a0and screens are being produced that capture and em-
\nbody the essence of
\ntraditional Arts and Crafts design. One such example, pictured below,\u00a0 left (top row),\u00a0 is by the\u00a0Iron Thistle Forge<\/a>\u00a0in Whitefish, Montana.\u00a0 The fireplace door directly to it\u2019s right is by Archive Designs in Eugene, Oregon, as are the fireplace screens shown in the bottom row.<\/p>\n
